Specialised Educational Reviews

SPELD SA’s Specialised Educational Reviews screen students’ skill development and performance across a range of areas as captured in that moment of time. These reviews are conducted by an experienced special education teacher and consultant.

Reviews offered include:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Literacy and Numeracy

If both literacy and numeracy require screening, reviews are conducted over two sessions.

Literacy Review:

  • This consists of observation, discussion, and a series of short screens and tests, involving verbal, auditory and hands-on activities. Actual screens conducted are dependent on individual needs. Types of screening offered include articulation, auditory discrimination, phonemic awareness, sound and letter knowledge, reading, spelling, writing and handwriting.

Numeracy Review:

  • A series of hands-on tasks look at the child’s understanding of ‘number’, examining their thinking processes and strategies applied when solving number-related processes. Concepts covered include number, counting, subitising, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The process of the review:

  • All reviews begin with a short discussion with the parent/s, gathering important and relevant background information and concerns that contribute to the overall picture of the child’s development and progress.
  • A review session will normally take about 2 hours, enabling the collection of information, developing a rapport with the child, conducting observations and completing standardised testing screens.
  • A double review will be extended and include a 45-minute break between the literacy and numeracy components.
  • Brief feedback is provided on the day, followed by a subsequent written report detailing findings and providing suggestions for possible avenues to pursue and/or strategies for implementation.
