For people who live in the outback, interstate or an area where there are no local tutors, SPELD SA offers online tutoring. Online tutoring takes place in real-time between a tutor and an individual student. Online tutoring can be provided to students from 7 years of age.

SPELD SA Online Tutoring

Tutors

SPELD SA tutors are South Australian registered teachers who have a minimum of two years' classroom experience and specialist training to work with students with dyslexia. Online tutors undertake further training to teach on the internet. A SPELD SA tutor will create an individual learning program for your child.

Equipment/support needed

You will need:

  • A computer
  • An internet connection
  • Speakers and microphone or headphones with a microphone
  • Access to a printer and scanner to assist with loading and printing homework or tasks (not essential but helpful)

Our trained tutors will help parents with the initial setup of the online room. A parent must be present with the student during online tutoring lessons, to support the student and provide problem solving assistance when there are technical difficulties.

Application for a Tutor

If you would like us to arrange an online tutor for you, please complete and send the Tutor Allocation Form with a cheque/money order/credit card details for $85 (GST included). Once this is received, we will arrange for a tutor to contact you by phone. Tutor allocation is done weekly. The process will take approximately 10 days from receipt of your form.

If you have any concerns once tutoring has commenced, please do not hesitate to discuss these - in the first instance with your tutor, and then with SPELD SA. Reallocation for a different tutor is possible within the year if required, without extra charge.

Fees

The current average hourly rate for a tutor is $60. This is a private contractual agreement between you and the tutor. Fees are payable to the tutor in advance, in blocks of 10. The method of payment is negotiated with the tutor.

Homework

Most tutors set homework designed to consolidate the work done during the tutorial session. This usually involves 10 to 15 minutes practice, for example, in reading, phonics or spelling 5 times a week. Tutoring does mean an extra workload on top of the student’s normal school homework and negotiation may be needed with your child’s school to ensure that they are not overloaded.

Liaison

To maximise the benefits of tuition, it is important for parents to be involved and supportive. There is no magic wand or “quick fix”, however your tutor will be fully committed to helping the student to overcome their identified learning difficulties. Any information that can be provided to the tutor upon commencement will help the tutor plan a suitable program. Background information, including psychological assessments, speech pathologist/audiology reports, work samples, school reports, tests and observations will assist the tutor in building a picture of the student’s abilities and needs.

Reporting and Feedback

Parents are encouraged to discuss their child’s progress on a regular basis, either after the lesson, if time and circumstances permit, or by telephone. Tutors provide a written report twice yearly, a copy of which is given to SPELD SA by the tutor.
