SPELD SA encourages all students to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The deadline for the 2016 challenge is 9th September, 2016.

Students are challenged to read 12 books from the start of the school year until the first Friday in September

Choosing books

When choosing books, it is important to select those that the student will find enjoyable and they can read independently (rule of thumb: no more than 1 error per 10 words).

Provisions for students with learning difficulties

The Premier’s Reading Challenge makes the following provisions for students with specific literacy needs in the guidelines:

8. The Premier's Reading Challenge should be inclusive for all students who are willing to take up the challenge to read 12 books. At the teacher's discretion, students may read more than 4 books not on the booklist (Reception - Year 7) or more than 8 books not on the booklist (Year 8 - 9).
11. Students can read books at an appropriate level for their language proficiency or literacy level to achieve the Premier’s Reading Challenge:
  • Books chosen from the Challenge booklist can be from the booklist for their year level and from booklists for year levels above their own. Guidance may be required for students in their choice of titles from booklists for older students.
  • Students with disabilities may read books that are at an appropriate literacy level for them and/or use texts that have been adapted to meet their individual learning and literacy needs including Braille texts, talking books, e-books, and books on tape, DVD or CD.
  • The challenge of reading books in other languages may appeal to students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are learning English as a second language and those involved in First Language Maintenance and Development Programs. (eg: students with special needs, ESL students).
13. Home education students or those participating individually do not need to register. Simply download the Student Reading Record from the website and submit the completed form by the end of September directly to the Premier's Reading Challenge Manager.

Book title suggestions for struggling readers

Reading age of 5 - 7 years

The books in the list below are for students with a reading age of 5-7 years. All of the titles are available to borrow from the SPELD SA library for members. Some of these titles may be available through your local public library or SERU

They were chosen using three criteria:

  1. The reading age/grade relates to the expected levels of phonic and sight word achievement determined by Reception and Year 1 curricula.
  2. The words in the stories are phonically regular and the sight words are listed in the ‘preface’ so that they can be taught to the student before they read the book. The goal is that a student can then read and understand the book without help.
  3. They have a good story line and/or are humorous (selection made by an 11 year old boy who loves books).

Any book titles from the Oxford Reading Tree, Songbirds Series, Collins Big Cat Phonics Series, Dandelion Launchers Series and Dandelion Readers Series, could be substituted for a book title from the list below.
